It is pure ash upon the body of Śambhu that is one’s own good deeds — giving birth to graceful auspiciousness and delight. It removes the smudge from the beautiful mirror of the devotee’s mind; and, once applied as a tilaka, it brings the whole troop of virtues under one’s control.
यह पुण्य रूपी शम्भु के शरीर पर शोभित निर्मल विभूति है — सुन्दर, मंगलमयी, आनन्द को जन्म देने वाली। यह भक्तों के मन-रूपी सुन्दर दर्पण की मलिनता को हरने वाली है, और तिलक के रूप में लगाने पर समस्त गुण-समूह को वश में करने वाली है।
The second stanza of Chaupāī 1 continues the guru-dust image. The dust is now sacred ash on Śiva’s body — raising the humble household detail to the highest possible register. Tulsīdās works this way through the whole opening: a small thing seen through such refined eyes that it becomes the greatest thing.
