धूमउ तजइ सहज करुआई। अगरु प्रसंग सुगंध बसाई॥
भनिति भदेस बस्तु भलि बरनी। राम कथा जग मंगल करनी॥
dhūmau tajai sahaja karuāī, agaru prasaṁga sugaṁdha basāī |
bhaniti bhadesa bastu bhali baranī, rāma kathā jaga maṁgala karanī ||
English Rendering
Even smoke gives up its natural bitterness, and, on meeting agar-wood, takes on its fragrance. The composition may be rustic, but the subject it describes is fine — the story of Rāma, which brings blessing to the world.

धुआँ भी अगर की संगति पाकर अपनी सहज कड़वाहट छोड़ देता है और सुगन्ध अपना लेता है। मेरी रचना भले ही भद्दी हो, पर उसका विषय भला है — श्रीरामकथा — जो जगत के लिए मंगल-कारिणी है।

The smoke-and-agar image is Tulsīdās’s return to a favourite theme. Smoke, meeting the right wood, becomes incense. Rough speech, meeting the right subject, becomes prayer.
