मनि मानिक मुकुता छबि जैसी। अहि गिरि गज सिर सोह न तैसी॥
नृप किरीट तरुनी तनु पाई। लहहिं सकल सोभा अधिकाई॥
mani mānika mukutā chabi jaisī, ahi giri gaja sira soha na taisī |
nṛpa kirīṭa tarunī tanu pāī, lahahiṁ sakala sobhā adhikāī ||
English Rendering
The beauty of gems, rubies and pearls is not the same on the head of the snake, the mountain, or the elephant where they are born. Set into a king’s crown, or placed upon a young woman’s body, all of them gain far greater splendour.

मणि, माणिक्य और मुक्ता की छवि सर्प के मस्तक पर, पर्वत में, या हाथी के मस्तक पर वैसी शोभा नहीं देती। पर वे ही जब राजा के मुकुट में जड़े जाते हैं या तरुणी के अंग पर सजाए जाते हैं — तब समस्त शोभा अधिक पाते हैं।
Context — Editorial
Tulsīdās turns from smoke, milk and sandal to jewels. Every precious stone comes from a modest source — a serpent’s hood, a mountain-side, an elephant’s forehead. Its beauty appears only when it is set into a worthy place. The argument prepares his own claim in the next verse.
