English Rendering
The first poet (Vālmīki) knew the power of the Name — he became pure though he chanted it in reverse. And Bhavānī, hearing Śiva’s word that the Name equals a thousand names of Viṣṇu, chants it as her own — in the very company of her beloved.
Context — Editorial
The two great precedents of the Name’s power. Vālmīki, a wayfarer, could only manage MARĀ (dead) reversed — and it still worked. Pārvatī, hearing Śiva say once that the Name equals the whole Viṣṇu-sahasra-nāma, took him at his word and kept chanting. Both, wildly different, arrived at the same place.
