Even the wicked are set right by holy company — as base metal is beautified by the touch of the philosopher’s stone. And should destiny place a good person into bad company, they behave like the gem on a serpent’s hood — they follow their own quality, not the company’s.

दुष्ट भी सत्संग पाकर सुधर जाते हैं — जैसे पारस के स्पर्श से घटिया धातु भी सुन्दर सुवर्ण-सी बन जाती है। और यदि किसी कारण से सज्जन कुसंग में पड़ भी जाएँ — तो वे सर्प के मस्तक की मणि की तरह अपने ही गुणों का अनुसरण करते हैं (कुसंग का दोष नहीं लेते)।

A precisely balanced couplet. Bad company can be rescued by satsang — upward pull. Good people, on the other hand, are not spoiled by bad company — they carry their own quality, like the mythical jewel on a snake’s head which shines regardless of its host.
