Bāla Kāṇḍa·Chaupāī·4.3
तेज कृपानु रोष महिषेसा। अघ अवगुन धन धनी धनेसा॥
उदय केतु सम हित सबही के। कुम्भकरन सम सोवत नीके॥
teja kṛpānu roṣa mahiṣesā, agha avaguna dhana dhanī dhanesā |
udaya ketu sama hita sabahī ke, kumbhakarana sama sovata nīke ||
English Rendering
In heat they are the sword itself; in anger, Yama on his buffalo. In the wealth of sin and vice they are Kubera, treasurer of every kind of failing. Their rise is a comet, dreaded by all; their sleep, like Kumbhakarṇa’s, is universally welcome.
हिन्दी अनुवाद
ताप में वे कृपाण (तलवार) की भाँति तेज हैं, क्रोध में महिष पर सवार यमराज-सम। पाप और दुर्गुण-रूपी धन के वे कुबेर हैं। उनका उदय (उन्नति) सबके लिए धूमकेतु के समान अशुभ है — और उनका सोना कुम्भकर्ण की तरह सभी को अच्छा लगता है।
Context — Editorial
Every simile keeps the ironic register. The wicked man’s presence is anti-cosmic (a comet); his absence — even in mere sleep — is a public good. The Kumbhakarṇa image is especially precise: everyone breathed easier while he slept.
