Bāla Kāṇḍa·Chaupāī·5.2
बंदउँ संत असंत चरना। दुख प्रद उभय बीच कछु बरना॥
बिछुरत एक प्रान हरि लेहीं। मिलत एक दारुन दुख देहीं॥
baṁdaũ saṁta asaṁta caranā, dukha prada ubhaya bīca kachu baranā |
bichurata eka prāna hari lehīṁ, milata eka dāruna dukha dehīṁ ||
English Rendering
I bow to the feet of the good and of the not-good alike — both give pain, and between the two some difference is worth naming. On separation, one takes one’s very life away; on meeting, the other gives a devastating grief.
हिन्दी अनुवाद
मैं सन्तों और असन्तों दोनों के चरणों की वन्दना करता हूँ। दोनों दुःखदायी हैं, फिर भी दोनों में एक अन्तर है — एक (सन्त) जब बिछड़ते हैं, तब वे मानो प्राण ही ले जाते हैं; और दूसरे (असन्त) जब मिलते हैं, तब वे भीषण दुःख देते हैं।
Context — Editorial
A masterful chaupāī of comparison. Tulsīdās says both saints and non-saints hurt — and then draws the precise distinction. The saint’s pain is the pain of loss; the wicked man’s pain is the pain of presence. One is a wound of love; the other, a wound of encounter.
