धूम कुसंगति कारिख होई। लिखिय पुरान मंजु मसि सोई॥
सोइ जल अनल अनिल संघाता। होइ जलद जग जीवन दाता॥
dhūma kusaṁgati kārikha hoī, likhiya purāna maṁju masi soī |
soi jala anala anila saṁghātā, hoi jalada jaga jīvana dātā ||
English Rendering
Smoke, in poor company, becomes soot; the same smoke, on a scribe’s palette, becomes the beautiful ink in which the Purāṇas are written. The very same smoke, meeting water, fire and wind together, becomes the rain-cloud, the world’s giver of life.

धूम कुसंग में जाकर कारिख (कालिख) बनता है; वही धूम पुराणों को लिखने वाली सुन्दर स्याही भी बनता है। वही जल, अग्नि और वायु के सङ्ग से मेघ बनकर जगत का जीवन-दाता होता है।
Context — Editorial
Perhaps the finest stanza of the whole company-of-saints teaching. One substance — smoke — becomes three utterly different things depending on what it meets: soot, ink of scripture, or life-giving cloud. The verse settles the argument without polemic: nothing is inherently anything until placed in company.
