मति अति नीच ऊँचि रुचि आछी। चहिय अमिय जग जुरइ न छाछी॥
छमिहहिं सज्जन मोरि ढिठाई। सुनिहहिं बालबचन मन लाई॥
mati ati nīca ū̃ci ruci āchī, cahiya amiya jaga jurai na chāchī |
chamihahiṁ sajjana mori ḍhiṭhāī, sunihahiṁ bālabacana mana lāī ||
English Rendering
My intellect is very low; my taste is loftily high. I want nectar — in a world where I cannot even lay hands on buttermilk. The good will forgive this audacity of mine; they will hear a child’s words with their attention given.
हिन्दी अनुवाद
मेरी बुद्धि अति निम्न है, पर रुचि बड़ी ऊँची है। मैं अमृत चाहता हूँ, जबकि जगत में मुझे मट्ठा भी नहीं मिलता। सज्जन मेरी इस ढिठाई को क्षमा करेंगे और इस बालक की बातों को ध्यान से सुनेंगे।
Context — Editorial
Two of the sharpest similes of self-portrait in Hindi. The gap between capacity (chāchī, buttermilk — the humblest of things) and desire (amiya, nectar — the highest) is drawn precisely. And the appeal is not to critics but to parents.
