Bāla Kāṇḍa·Chaupāī·9.1
khala parihāsa hoi hita morā, kāka kahahiṁ kalakaṁṭha kaṭhorā |
haḱsahiṁ baka dādura cātakahī, haḱsahiṁ malina khala bimala batakahī ||
English Rendering
The mockery of the wicked will only do me good. Crows call the cuckoo’s song harsh; the heron laughs at the swan, the frog at the cātaka. In just this way, the stained wicked laugh at any spotless conversation.
Context — Editorial
Tulsīdās turns even the wicked’s mockery into an argument in his own favour. Their laughter at the good is the sound of a category-mistake — a crow trying to understand a cuckoo. Being laughed at by such a critic, he says, is itself a form of praise.
